If you are a couple planning to get engaged, the phrase ‘size isn’t everything’ might seem to relate to another aspect of your relationship. However, you can be assured that it is very relevant when buying a ring.

This is an important consideration for those looking around for engagement rings, whether it is an item already on display or something bespoke based on your own ideas. It can be very easy to get influenced by trends, what celebrities have done or even what ladies in your family have worn, but the choice is truly yours.

Among the reported recent trends is an apparent tendency for engagement rings to be larger, bulkier and more visible. This is the observation of Cosmopolitan, which highlighted some pretty big rocks being worn by celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Zendaya and Georgina Rodriguez. We could now add Camila Mendes to that list.

Big Stones Are Not Just A Trend For The Rich

That may be only to be expected, given that none of these women are engaged to men without a lot of cash, giving them the budget to go big. The chances are that your wealth is a tiny fraction of theirs, so does a trend for bigger rocks apply beyond the filthy rich?

The answer, Cosmopolitan suggests, is yes. “It seems like in today’s social media landscape, ring reveals are competing against each other and need to be impressive enough to stop your scrolling,” it declared.

However, the article noted that this is not the whole picture. It quoted a New York jeweller, Reema Chopra, founder of Khepri Jewels, who said that it isn’t really about carat size or big budgets. Having a stand-out design is also important, she declared, suggesting pear and marquise cut diamonds provide “the best bang for your buck”.

She added that a bespoke design can be the best way for a ring to stand out, remarking: “People want to differentiate with colour - like yellow or brown - or with cuts you can’t replicate.”

Of course, some might say that Cosmopolitan is relating mainly to what Americans choose to do, but in a social media age, these trends are global and the celebrities with big rocks are equally spread out. After all, Georgina Rodriguez is engaged to Portuguese football megastar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bespoke Design Provides Alternatives

The truth about big diamonds is that they can always impress a lot of people. However, that does not mean it is everyone’s style. This is not just about flaunting wealth but making a statement. For some, that may mean something big and bold, but for others, something understated, or crafty, or simply unique and novel.

Having a bespoke ring made provides the opportunity to do something very different from just seeking out a big rock. The Cosmopolitan article went on to interview 36 ladies about their engagement rings and some of them had more minimalist rings, with this reflecting their (and their partner’s) personalities and individual style ideas.

While it is easy to find articles about the most expensive engagement rings ever (Financial Express recently ran one with the revelation that Taylor Swift’s ring is not among them), the twin realities of modest budget and varied taste mean you really should not feel trapped by the idea that it is all about size and cost nowadays.

Finding A Ring That Suits You

Instead, now is a chance to take a step back and ask a few questions about what a ring that truly reflects your tastes and personalities would be like.

For instance, do you even go for a diamond at all, or at least a solitaire? Could it, for instance, be a small diamond combined with other stones in a trilogy ring? For instance, if each of you has a favourite colour or share the same preference, could that be represented in the ring?

A quirky style might just please the people you want to impress more than something big and chunky anyway. The point made about social media by Cosmopolitan may risk missing the point. Yes, some people might be impressed if they see a large stone, but maybe the people who matter to you will be those who like something more intricate and modest.

Even that may not matter to you so much. Ultimately, a bespoke design provides the chance for you to get the ring that you want, that represents your personality and ideals, your conceptions of beauty. If that isn’t what those around you would choose, you might ask: so what? After all, you almost certainly haven’t told them what ring design they should have.

Getting married is one of the most special things you will ever do in life and marriage is, by definition, the most unique and dedicated of relationships. That means a bespoke engagement or wedding ring can reflect that uniqueness in whatever way you want.
