Choosing an engagement ring is a decision that nobody wants to get wrong, so it’s essential to do lots of research into different gemstones, metals and styles before committing to a band your partner can’t say, “No” to.
That doesn’t mean you should play it safe when picking an engagement ring though, as some of the most unique styles could be just what they love. While the classic solitaire diamond will never go out of fashion, some people want something a little different to display on their ring finger.
This is where ‘toi et moi’ engagement rings come in, with this style consisting of two complimentary stones, which means your bespoke jewellery will definitely be one of a kind.
What are toi et moi rings?
Toi et moi literally means ‘you and me’ in French, and this ring is so-called as it is meant to include a stone that represents both partners.
This design was made popular in the 19th Century, but most jewellery stores have traditionally favoured simple one-stone designs over the combination of gems.
However, toi et moi bands are making a big comeback in 2025, as couples want their ring to be truly unique and showcase the personality of both spouses. It, therefore, combines a vintage, timeless feel with an individual touch.
What do toi et moi rings look like?
Not only do toi et moi rings combine two different stones, but they have a specific look. One of the stones, for instance, is set at an angle so it looks like it is leaning towards the other. This gives the impression that it is kissing the other gem.
They are sometimes made with curved bands, as straight ones won’t be flush with the ring if the gems are low set. However, if your stones are set high, both curved and straight bands work equally well.
Alternatively, you could have the stones cut into the band for a really unique look that secures the two stones together forever.
The great thing about toi et moi bands is that couples can choose whatever stones they want, but they are usually set in certain shapes. For instance, pear with oval or marquise with pear, as these combinations work particularly well together.
However, an emerald-cut stone with marquise, round with emerald, or two pears also look great together, so the options are endless.
What stones can you include in toi et moi rings?
Again, one of the reasons why couples are favouring toi et moi rings is that there are no rules when it comes to what stones to include.
While engagement rings typically have diamonds, this is not necessarily the case with this type of band.
Instead, you could combine diamond with emerald, ruby, aquamarine, sapphire, tanzanite or amethyst.
You could also opt for a completely different type of stone, such as opal, pearl, tourmaline or moonstone, which gives a timeless look to the ring that is meant to last a lifetime.
For brides and grooms, this gives guys the chance to incorporate their favourite colour, their birthstone, or their preferred gem into the engagement ring, so they feel more part of the band, which is meant to symbolise their commitment to one another.
Of course, diamonds don’t have to be included in a toi et moi ring at all, as any combination of stone works well. Ruby and morganite can look beautiful next to one another, while a pearl and aquamarine ring has an elegant look to it.
On the other hand, you could opt for two diamonds if you still want to incorporate a traditional engagement ring feel to your piece of jewellery.
Why are they suddenly so popular?
Toi et moi rings have been around for a couple of hundred years, so why are they suddenly taking the world by storm?
One of the main reasons for their resurgence is their popularity among celebrities. Model Emily Ratajkowski, for instance, got lots of attention for her two-carat princess diamond and tilted three-carat pear-cut diamond ring when she was engaged to producer Sebastian Bear Mc-Clard.
After her divorce, she no longer wears the toi et moi ring as it was designed, but has chosen to separate them into two gorgeous pieces of jewellery instead.
Singing sensation Arianna Grande has also debuted her dual-stone ring, combining a huge oval diamond with a simple pearl.
Another celebrity that has publicly shown her love for toi et moi rings is Megan Fox, with the actress wearing a three-carat emerald pear-shaped stone next to a three-carat brilliant white diamond pear-shaped stone on an 18-carat gold pave band.
The ring, which was given to her by Machine Gun Kelly’s Stephen Webster when they got engaged in 2022, is thought to be worth around $415,000 (£321,019).
