Now that the weather is closing in, our fashion choices are shifting from pinstripe waistcoats and printed dresses to faux fur coats and biker boots, which means it’s time to swap our favourite jewellery pieces for earrings, necklaces and bracelets that will complement the autumnal look.
To help you know what jewellery to wear this autumn/winter, we’ve put together a list of the top five trends you can’t miss out on:
1) Pearls
Pearls come and go in fashion. However, this season they are very much in.
In fact, according to a survey by Liberty, the most popular jewellery type in both London and Manchester is the pearl necklace. Pearl is also the second most popular gemstone in the UK, with 42,240 searches over the last year alone, following diamond at 48,330.
Pearls are having a big revival this year, as they give a timeless look that is both vintage and punky, especially if you opt for a pearl choker, a tiered pearl bracelet, or molten pearls, which offer an imperfect quality.
2) Tennis bracelets
Another popular piece you should invest in this autumn/winter is a tennis bracelet. While 2024 was the year of statement jewellery, 2025 sees fashion embrace a more elegant look.
These slim bracelets typically include a single line of identical gemstones packed closely together, which maximises the sparkle. They are usually diamonds of the same colour, size and cut, and are held together with a precious metal, such as gold or platinum, making them even more luxurious.
They are so-called thanks to American tennis star Chris Evert, who famously halted a match to pick up her diamond bracelet after it fell off her wrist during play when she was taking part in the 1987 US Open. Since then, it has been known as a ‘tennis bracelet’, but it can still be called an ‘eternity bracelet’.
3) Oval engagement rings
If you’re planning on proposing this autumn, or your fiancé has already popped the question and now you’re on the hunt for the perfect bespoke engagement ring, you may want to consider an oval one.
This is because oval engagement rings are very popular at the moment, thanks to their brilliant cut and elegant appearance.
The oval shape is more elongated than a traditional round cut, and gives the illusion of a larger stone. It can also make the ring finger appear slimmer, giving a graceful appearance.
Consequently, the oval engagement ring has proved popular among celebrities recently, with the likes of Lady Gaga, Hailey Bieber and Kourtney Kardashian all showing off their beautiful diamonds.
Available in both halo and solitaire settings, brides-to-be will be able to find the perfect oval ring that suits their style.
4) Initial necklaces
Admittedly, name necklaces have been around for a while, with Carrie Bradshaw first launching them back in the ‘90s with the hit series Sex & The City.
However, along with the show’s spin off And Just Like That, the popular jewellery piece has made a return.
Many celebrities have been seen wearing initial necklaces lately, from model Hailey Bieber wearing her baby’s initials around her neck to actor Ryan Gosling regularly being photographed with an ‘E’ chain for his wife, actress Eva Mendes.
Keep these necklaces simple and sophisticated, as they are timeless and can be worn again and again throughout the years.
They also make fantastic gifts, whether you’re looking ahead for a Christmas present, or you want to give your loved one something special to keep. An initial pendant is certainly something that will mean a lot to them and they will cherish forever.
5) Dangling earrings
There’ll always be a place for simple studs, but this is the year for dangling earrings. This could be an ideal choice for your Christmas outfits, especially when decorated with gemstones, as they will create lots of sparkle for the ensemble.
As they add movement, they work particularly well with longer dresses, matching the swishing and swaying of the gown.
Several designers have included longer-length earrings on the runway this season, including Ralph Lauren, Isabel Marant and Chloe, giving an indication of just how popular this look is going to become over the next few weeks.
Crystals in a huge array of colours are popular on dangling earrings, so don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour to your outfit with these statement earrings, from turquoise blue to emerald green. You could pick a shade that matches your evening gown or keep your outfit simple with a classic black dress and let your jewellery do the talking.
